SKNFRS Annual Summer Safety Programme created to safeguard children

Fire Sub Station Officer (FSSO) and Coordinator of Programme, Lesroy Caines
By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 12, 2017 (SKNIS): The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) Annual Summer Safety Programme, which is now its 15th year was “introduced to try and decrease the incidences of fires caused by children or death of children caused by fires” said Fire Sub Station Officer (FSSO) and Coordinator of Programme, Lesroy Caines.

“The brilliant idea came about from a former FSSO, Ms. Natalie Fough, who thought it best to introduce the programme to sort of decrease those sort of incidents caused by children,” he said, while appearing on Wednesday’s (July 12) edition of “Working for You”, adding that for the past 15 plus years “there would have been a vast increase in those sorts of incidents, so the plan was to stop or try to decrease those.”

The coordinator said that a number of topics were introduced to ensure that the aim of the programme was met. They entered into a partnership with different agencies such as the Coast Guard, to deal with water safety; National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to deal with disaster preparedness tips; the Traffic Department for the traffic safety tips; as well as Constable Lauston Percival, who was introduced just this year to deal with crime and violence.

“We basically introduced the topic crime and violence to sort of act as a tool to join the other forces, national security, to try and sort of decrease or give our two pence in crime reduction,” said FSSO Caines. “The Programme is held simultaneously at the different stations. It was successfully held in Nevis from July 03 to 07 [with 61 children attending] and is still ongoing in St. Kitts from July 10-14.”

He added that to date, the count for today totaled 526 children with the average being about 500 per day. Different from the past years, two extra days were introduced this year “to try and make the programme better”. To commemorate the 15th anniversary, a march will take place on Friday, July 14, through the streets of Basseterre.

The SKNFRS Annual Summer Safety Programme began in 2002 in St. Kitts with 45 children and was rolled out in Nevis one year later in 2003 with approximately 25 children.
