Pan in Splendor Workshop attracts over 100 children

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Department of Culture’s Summer Steel Pan Workshop for children and adults has drawn well over 100 participants; a plus for the government agency.

Music specialist at the Department of Culture, Nigel Williams, who is present at the workshop, told SKNVibes that the event, dubbed, Pan in Splendor’, has catered for primary and secondary school children as well as adults.

The workshop has attracted 66 primary school students, 42 from secondary schools and 29 adults.

The two-week training package is a boost for the art form, as officials within the Department of Culture have recognized that steel pan is not as popular as it was in the past.

According to Williams, they have recognized that the art form is a good avenue for young people to learn about music.

“As you know, learning music occupies people to the point where there is no time for violence and no time for anything else.”

He indicated that through music, children would be able to grasp a life-long skill set despite the instrument they might choose to play.

“There are persons who are playing steel pan professionally, but if they want they could choose to play the trumpet or the piano - they would have what you would call the background that they could branch off onto any other musical instrument.”

Williams disclosed that they are in the process of holding discussions on placing more emphasis on music in schools.

In fact, the specialist pointed out that they are seeking to garner more steel pans and have them placed in schools for the children.

“The Department of Culture right now has a set of pans and we are really thinking seriously of getting about four or five sets…”

He lamented though that those may not come immediately and they are hopeful of having a second set before the year ends.

Williams reminded that there are already pans in several schools, including the Basseterre High and the Charles E. Mills Secondary, where they are spreading the art form.

The workshop will conclude with a recital on Friday (Aug. 4).
