BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MINISTER of Tourism in the Nevis Island Assembly, Hon. Mark Brantley has said that “something good is happening” in the area of culture on the island.

That announcement was made against the backdrop of early indications of the Culturama Festival seeing increased participation across several categories.

Brantley, while addressing the opening of Culturama 43 last evening (Jul. 27) in Charlestown, explained that they have seen increased participation in the Calypso Competition with a total of 19 participants competing – a number that they have not seen in many years.

“This year, more than any other year, we are having a bumper crop of participants,” Brantley said.

He thanked the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Abonaty Liburd, and his new members for the new blood and life they have brought to the Festival.

This was recognized in the staging of the Wet Fete, which the Federal Minister noted turned out to be a success “to the point where some people are asking for Wet Fete part two”.

He noted that there are a number of other new ideas that they have brought on stream for this year’s event while sticking to the perennials, including the food fairs, calypso shows and queen shows.

Debuting this year is the Queen of Queens Calypso Show.

“There can be no complaints this year. I hope the vendors are happy and I am hoping that the revellers are happy, and I ask you please to enjoy Culturama 43 responsibly.”

The event saw a number of cultural presentations from performers, a steel pan group and other entertainers.

Formally declaring the event open, Nevis’ Premier, the Hon. Vance Amory stressed that everyone is aware that the Festival started in 1974 and has seen a number of changes occurring since that time.

Including in those changes were the morphing of the culture and insertion of a number of different programmes and activities which have lent themselves to the enhancement of Culturama over the years.

“And so tonight what you have seen and heard are just really part of that larger picture of a great celebration of our history; a great celebration of our heritage and our legacy, and our culture.”

Premier Amory reminded the patrons that they are in for a magnificent eight or more days of activities, while encouraging them to participate in shows and programmes that they feel so to do.

The 2017 Culturama Festival runs from July 27 to August 19.
