Eight worthy candidates off to pursue their dreams

    ROBERT MANNING M.B.E SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 2017 

     

    July 30th, 2017 -- In an impressive award ceremony held on Tuesday July 25th, 2017 at Social Security Headquarters and attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Hon Shawn Richards, Premier of Nevis and Minister of Social Security, Hon Vance Amory, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Mr Ron Collins, Members of the Social Security Board and Scholarship Committee, parents and other invited guests, eight of the Nation’s aspiring professionals were the recipients of the Robert Manning M.B.E University Financial Assistance Grant.  
     
    The recipients, chosen from a field of sixteen (16) applicants are as follows: 
     
    - Ms. Krystan Springette – BSc. in Learning Disabilities, Midwestern State University 
     
    - Mr. Joseph Williams – BSc. in Industrial Technology, UTEC Jamaica 
      
    - Mr. Rohn Brookes – BSc. in Biotechnology, University of the West Indies (Mona Campus)  

    -  Ms. Hadya Dolphin – BSc. in Law, University of the West Indies (Mona Campus) 
     
    - Mr. Kerown Eddy – BSc. in Agribusiness and Agri. Tech, University of the West Indies (St. Augustine Campus) 
     
    - Mr. Richie Morton – BSc. in Construction Engineering, University of Central Florida 
     
    -  Ms. Sherielle Forbes – BSc. in Management Information Systems, Midwestern State University 
     
    - Ms. Azuree Liburd – BSc. in Law, University of the West Indies (St. Augustine Campus).   
     
    Director of Social Security, Mrs. Sephlin Lawrence during her welcome remarks expressed sentiments on behalf of the Social Security Board and was particularly pleased of its continued ability to offer financial assistance for University students. “This is another way in which Social Security makes a greater impact on the overall development of our economy, in an effort to build the Nation’s Human Resources” she stated.  

    Premier of Nevis and Minister of Social Security, the Hon. Vance Amory also gave remarks during the ceremony. The Minister challenged the scholarship recipients to make the best of their educational opportunity by deepening their knowledge and skills, selecting a strong support system, embracing the responsibilities and challenges they will face, while approaching all endeavors with an open mind.  

    The Chairperson of the Scholarship and Training Committee, Ms. Claudine Saunders spoke passionately about the committee’s decision with regards to the selection process as all sixteen (16) applicants were deserving and of the highest caliber. The Committee Chair made it clear that the outcome of this investment is for the students to return home and build this Federation. “We are not going to bond you for life, but we are hopeful that this group of recipients will bond together and start their own financial assistance for other students who will then be struggling to meet the financial demands of University”.  

    In a show of support and to openly thank the Social Secuirty Board for its financial assistance, Alumni Ms. Ornette Henry, shared candidly the struggles encountered before she was able to secure the grant from Social Security.  She expressed profound gratitude and encouraged the awardees to pay it forward at every opportunity possible.  Special Alumni 

    Awardee, Kyle Edwards who joined the proceedings virtually also showed support to the students and encouraged them to seek out various scholarships while pursuing their educational goal. 

    Announcement of Awards was made by Deputy Director, Mr Elvin Bailey while presentation was made by both the Hon Shawn Richards and Hon Vance Amory. 

    New awardee, Mr. Rohn Brookes expressed appreciation on behalf of this year’s recipients.  He thanked for Board for its continued empowerment of the young people of St. Kitts and Nevis and pledged the recipients’ commitment to make our Nation proud.  

    Invocation was delivered by Manager MIS, Mr James Bradshaw, the Vote of Thanks by Public Relations Officer, Ms. Tasha Hendricskon while the ceremony was ably chaired by Ms. Kamilah Lawrence AG. Manager, Public Relations Department.  

    The Robert E. Manning MBE University Scholarship is one of three (3)  scholarship awards by Social Security. The others are the Stanley Amory Memorial Technical Scholarship and the Susanna Lee High School Scholarship. To date, approximately thirty students (30) have benefitted from the Robert E Manning MBE University Award.
