BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – GARVEY ROGERS was yesterday (June 22) committed to serve an eight-year prison sentence for a gun-related offence.

The young Conaree resident was convicted of the offence of “shooting at with intent” on Thursday last (June 18) by a six-man/six-woman jury.

The short case saw two witnesses; the virtual complainant, Kenville Carey, and investigator, Constable Carl Greaux and no defence witnesses.

Carey told the court that shortly after 11:00 on the night of October 20, 2007, he was walking along the stretch of road in the vicinity of Tulley’s Mechanic Shop in the company of Leon Jederon when he [Jederon] took off running.  He further said that he saw Garvey running towards him and he took cover next to a bus, and Garvey thereafter shot at him.

The jury took hours to deliberate but emerged divided 10-2, and the sentencing hearing was deferred.

Rogers was sentenced yesterday, and this marks the second gun-related offence for which he was convicted and imprisoned.

Over one year ago, Rogers was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to the maximum, 10 years imprisonment. Devon ‘Junie’ Roberts of Conaree was the victim of that crime which took place on June 22, 2008.
