GIS,16 August 2017 - The Virgin Islands is preparing to welcome the new Governor to the Territory on Monday, August 21.
Mr. Augustus Jaspert will take the oaths of office on Tuesday, August 22 at a Swearing-in and Welcome Ceremony at the Virgin Islands Supreme Court, situated upstairs the House of Assembly. The ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ZBVI 780 AM and online at www.zbviradio.com. It will also be live streamed on the Government’s Facebook page.
Mr. Jaspert’s appointment was announced in May, 2017 and he succeeds former Governor John S. Duncan, OBE.
Speaking on his appointment as Governor of the Virgin Islands, Governor Designate Mr. Jaspert stated that it is an absolute honour to be appointed to succeed Governor Duncan.
Mr. Jaspert stated, “I am greatly looking forward to working with the elected representatives, public officers and the community in the British Virgin Islands over the coming years.”
Mr. Jaspert added, “My wife, two young sons and I are excited about meeting and getting to know the beautiful British Virgin Islands and those who live there and are contributing to their ongoing success.”
The Governor Designate is married to Millie Jaspert and has two sons, Tobias and Oscar. He joined central government in the United Kingdom in 2007 and has served in several capacities including the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street.
His most recent post was in the Cabinet Office as the Director of Security and Intelligence, National Security Secretariat. He also served as the Head of Drugs and Alcohol and the Head of Policing for the Home Office.
Mr. Jaspert was the Lead Manager for Children’s Services at the Surrey Country Council from 2001 to 2007, and served in Her Majesty’s Treasury as the Delivery Manager for the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit from 2007 to 2009.
Following his appoint, the Governor will spend his first few weeks in office meeting senior officials, department heads and members of the law enforcement agencies and the media. He will also visit the Sister Islands.
Mr. Augustus Jaspert will be the 13th Governor of the Territory of the Virgin Islands.
