BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FANS who braved the chilly breeze last evening (Aug. 18) to watch the Patriots battle against the Barbados Tridents at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, were treated to some entertainment before the rain had the final say.

Winning the toss in front of the thousands of home supporters, the St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots chose to field and Dwayne Smith punished a poor opening bowling effort by Carlos Brathwaite – who end with figures of 37 for 1 from three overs.

Smith’s 33 runs and captain Kieron Pollard’s 63 powered the visitors to a competitive 168 for 8 off their allotted 20 overs.

Pollard punished the bowlers when they pitched and also when they over pitched.
His 63 comprises 1x4 and 6x6s, while Shoaib Malik chipped in with a patient 29 from 30 balls.

Trinidadian Samuel Badree was the pick of the bowlers for the Patriots, snagging 2 for 27 from his four overs.

In reply, the Patriots were coasting at 84 for 1 in 9.3 over when the skies opened up.

However, with captain Chris Gayle leading from the from with 38 from 25 balls, which included 4x4s and 2x6s, the tone was already set for the Patriots to take full points under the Duckworth Lewis system.

Despite efforts by the ground staff for play to resume at 12:30 a.m. after the rain relented, a second downpour brought a premature end to the game after both captains decided to call it quits.

The action continues this evening at the same venue from 9:00 p.m., where the St. Lucia Stars will go up against the Patriots.

The Stars are looking for their first victory in the 2017 season.
