BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A large contingent from St. Kitts and Nevis left for Barbados yesterday (Aug. 21) to join 26 other nations at the 2017 Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA).

Masqueraders, dancers, musicians, band members and Carnival representatives, among others, winged out for Barbados where they are expected to showcase the Federation’s culture and heritage to the world.

Carnival Chairman Noah Mills told the media that the Committee was happy to have a representative attend the event.

The objective of attending the mega cultural event, according to Mills, is not only to market St. Kitts and Nevis but also to create a bond between the Federation and Barbados in their cultural events.

“…but from our perspective, with a smaller focus among the Carnival – Sugar Mas, we are carrying several bits of paraphernalia that we are going to pass around, make contact with the performers, Directors of Culture, organizers and production teams…”

This, the Chairman noted, is being done to ensure that the linkages between St. Kitts and Nevis and Barbados, as it relates to Carnival and Crop Over, could continually be nurtured.

Chief Executive Officer of the Nevis Cultural Foundation, Jerome Rawlins stated that despite being late, the contingent is looking forward to having an “enjoyable time” while showing all the products on offer on the sister isle.

Rawlins, who is leading the Nevis delegation, disclosed that they have folklore representatives and people from the Artisan Village, among others.

“We will be promoting the culture from St. Kitts-Nevis. We will also be promoting the arts from St. Kitts-Nevis, and we are also looking forward to a successful time in Barbados,” the CEO said.

Pointing out that CARIFESTA is about exhibiting the region’s culture, Rawlins noted that they are looking forward to showcasing the Federation’s culture at a regional level.

“I think we have missed out on a few CARIFESTA over the last couple of years. We went to the one in Suriname; I think was the last one. And we are getting back into the game, so to speak, to exhibit the culture of the Federation.”

Asked what they would want to take away from CARIFESTA, the CEO disclosed that they would want to highlight to the country that “culture is alive and well, and it is something that involves the entire populace”.
