Patriots qualify for Playoffs after punishing Tallawahs

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots continued in their winning last evening (Aug. 21) ways when they humbled the Jamaica Tallawahs by 37-runs to book their ticket to the Playoffs in Trinidad and Tobago next month.

Asked to bat after losing the toss, Patriots captain Chris Gayle played a classical innings to amass 71 runs from 55 balls, which included 4x4s and 4x6s.

Dropped on 15 by Odean Smith, Gayle made the Tallawahs pay dearly for that mistake, as he and Evin Lewis (69) ensured the side reached 208 for 3 off their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, the Tallawahs never found their footing in the game, losing wickets regularly to close their innings on 171 for 7.

Openers Gayle and Lewis put on a 110-run partnership which seemed to many in the stadium to have deflated the visitors hope, as they showed poor fielding and catching skills in the game.

Krishmar Santokie was the most economical of the Tallawahs bowlers, picking up 1 for 23 from his four overs.

Meanwhile, the pick of the Patriots bowlers was left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who snagged 3 for 35 in his four overs.

With that victory, the Patriots now jump to second position on the table with 11 points from seven games.

Patriots Carlos Brathwaite told reporters that he was happy with the win, which he noted was very important to the team in order to qualify for the Playoffs.

He noted that they are looking to finish strong at home before travelling to Jamaica and Barbados ahead of the knockout leg of the tournament.

“…we want to come out and give them (fans) another win tomorrow (Wednesday) and get into the top two, so we can get two bites of the cherry going into the finals,” Brathwaite added.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots will close out their home leg of the tournament against table-toppers Trinbago Knight Riders from 6:00 p.m. at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.
