Federation’s CSEC pass rate down; CAPE up

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OFFICIALS from the Ministry of Education this morning (Aug. 25) disclosed that two male students have topped the Federation at this year’s Caribbean Examinations Council’s exams, and that there has been a lower pass rate at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination but a higher one at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

Tarique Allen of Basseterre High School with 13 grade one passes from 14 subjects and Xavier-Jon Bass of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College with five grade ones were the two students who gained the most subject passes at CSEC and CAPE respectively.

These, however, are based on preliminary results from the CXC.

Minister of Education Hon. Shawn Richards and other members of the Ministry addressed reporters at a press conference held in the Parliamentary Lounge at Government Head Quarters, where they provided some statistics on this year’s overall performance.

The Minister explained that the Ministry had received the results just over a week ago, and based on feedback received they had seen it fit to have a press conference to make several announcements and respond to questions.

“For those persons writing CAPE, the national pass rate was 87.14% as compared to 85.75% in 2016, a slight improvement….On the other hand, the national pass rate for CSEC has been recorded at 75.71% this year and is a decline compared to the 82.83% pass rate attained in 2016.

“…as customary, the CXC results for these examinations are a much talked about subject among many students, parents, teachers and the Ministry of Education.

“We are cognizant that students’ overall performance depends on: One, students’ agency; two, parental support and involvement; three, teachers delivery and assessment; and four, school leadership and climate,” Minister Richards said.

The Education Minister indicated that they are still awaiting results from CXC in several areas, including Mathematics; however, he did disclose statistical passes for a few subjects.

Like many other islands, St. Kitts and Nevis did not achieve 50% passes in some critical subject areas such as Mathematics and English Literature.

In Mathematics, the Federation gained a 46.96% pass rate and 48.88% in English Literature, but a 63.65% pass rate in English A.

At the CAPE level, Applied Mathematics Unit 1 saw 100% passes as well as Unit 2; Pure Mathematics Unit 1, 68.88%; while Unit 2 registered 90%.

According to the Ministry of Education, a total of 1,641 candidates had registered for 6,109 subjects, and of that amount they gained 4,588 passes.

Because the regional examination body has an open query period, all results are deemed to be preliminary until that time elapses.
