CPL officials commend Patriots on turnaround performance

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ORGANIZERS of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) are impressed with the way the tournament has gone thus far, including the Federation’s hosting of the ‘biggest party in sport’.

With stops already made in Florida, St. Lucia, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago – the island where the final games are to be staged - the organizers are happy with the turnout they have so far seen.

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes Sports during their stopover in the Federation, Chief Executive Officer Damien O’Donohoe explained that they saw a strong start to the tournament, noticeably for St. Kitts and Nevis.

He said in the Federation there was a buzz for the tournament on television and also on the radio, as well as a positive report on ticket sales.

A plus for St. Kitts and Nevis was the overall performance of the Patriots.

O’Donohoe noted that the Patriots were once “the whipping boys of the tournament”, but this time around they made changes that proved to their benefit and that had been instrumental for the large crowds seen at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

“To see them turn around and are now going to make the finals is really huge for a small island like St. Kitts to be competing with the big boys of Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados.”

He however expressed disappointment over the games being affected by weather, but exclaimed despite that the party still continued.

Speaking to the performance of the St. Lucia Star, the CEO said he told the franchise owners that a Patriots, formerly the Antigua Hawksbills, were in a similar struggling position but they made changes and are currently one of the top teams.

“They have turned around with a couple of smart choices and some big transfers. I think that St. Lucia can absolutely do the same, but they need to go back to the drawing board now and work out what their plan is.”

The Stars are rooted at the bottom of the six-team table with one point from nine games, with that coming from a washed-out encounter against the Patriots.

Surprisingly, the team sacked its long-time captain in Darren Sammy after a string of defeats – a decision SKNVibes Sports understands is not sitting well with fans in St. Lucia.
