Sugar Boyz assistant coach pleased with team’s performance in India

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DESPITE not winning the Hero Tri-nation’s Football Tournament held earlier this month in India, the Sugar Boyz assistant coach, Jeffrey Hazel, was impressed with the team’s overall performance.

This came as the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) had sent a young team, comprising primarily of local players to compete against the host nation and Mauritius.

Team St. Kitts-Nevis went through the tournament undefeated with draws in their two games.

In their first encounter on Friday (Aug. 22), they drew 1-1 with Mauritius before coming out with a similar scoreline against the host team.

Hazel told SKNVibes Sports that he thought the team had “very good showings” despite not coming out victorious in any of their games.

Further, Hazel stated that the fact that the team was made up primarily of local-based players and that they have been out of competition since the league had close, speaks well to the talent that the Federation possesses.

“They were able to be exposed on the international arena against a team from Asian and one from Africa. Both games drew one-one and I thought that we did quite well with the players that we had - a very young team - and our league was finished in early June, so we weren’t playing any competitive football.”

Coming out of that tournament, Hazel expects greater things for the players as they are in discussions to have a number of international friendly games, both locally and abroad.

There are several teams that were asking for preparation matches, Hazel disclosed, but the SKNFA is said to be in discussion with various associations, with a view of penning those games.

However, the Indian tournament could produce greater exposure for the players, as the assistant coach explained that some of them could be in line to join various international clubs.

According to Hazel, a number of scouts were impressed with the performance of several players.

“From the tournament in Indian as well, we are awaiting some feedback from some of the scouts who were there. We are confident that some of the players were selected or would be selected for contracts to play in India or elsewhere.”

Another bright spot for the Sugar Boyz, according to Hazel, is that they stopped the Indian team from recording their 10th consecutive victory.
