SKNFA delays League opening by one week

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE recent passage of Hurricane Irma has been the cause for the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) announcing a delay in the start of the 2017/2018 Premier League.

In a telephone interview with SKNVibes Sports today (Sept. 13), General Secretary of the SKNFA, Stanley Jacobs confirmed the postmen.

The League was scheduled to start on Saturday (Sept. 23), with the President’s Cup slated for the prior weekend.

However, the President’s Cup – which features the League and FA Cup winners – will now be held September 23 and the Premier League on September 30.

According to Jacobs, this would give all the teams adequate time to resume their practice sessions which were interrupted by the passage of Hurricane Irma and the threat posed by Hurricane Jose.

Though neither of the hurricanes had caused any major damage, they however created disruptions to life and business on both St. Kitts and Nevis.

“The primary reason is the recent passage of the hurricanes that would have impacted the countries in some form. We believed that it would have disrupted the preparations of the various teams and the operations of the SKNFA. And so it was decided that postponing the League to a later date would give the teams more adequate time to prepared for the start of the League,” Jacobs said.

He pointed out that a number of teams would have had their practice sessions disrupted and that the grounds would have had some impact leading to delays.

“This led us to postpone the League for one week to allow them to be better prepared for the start of the League.”

The change to the schedule is not expected to hamper completion of the first portion of the season, which will take a break for the staging of Carnival.

“It wouldn’t affect the fixture because we were starting the League early, and that would give us enough cushion, enough time within the fixture to finish the Carnival Cup even before the Carnival season.”

Jacobs assured that the even with the postponement, they are still on course to finish before any major activities – “thus it is not going to impact us”.
