BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN autopsy has confirmed that the Federation’s most recent drowning victim died as a result of “asphyxia”.

Resident pathologist Dr. Jesus DeBrok performed a post mortem on the remains of 24-year-old Dwight McCall of Long Alley, Mansion Village on Tuesday and, according to a police report, the doctor’s finding was that he asphyxiated.

According to www.dictionary.com, asphyxia is “a condition in which an extreme decrease in the amount of oxygen in the body accompanied by an increase of carbon dioxide”.

McCall, according to reports, went to Mansion Bay some time after 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009 with relatives to pick whelks and sea bathe when he encountered difficulty while in the water. A police press release indicates that McCall disappeared “when a large wave consumed him.” His relatives, who were on the beach with him, endeavoured to provide assistance but their attempts were unsuccessful.

His body was taken from the sea and he was pronounced dead by the District Medical Office (DMO).

McCall’s home-going service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Tabernacle Methodist Church.
