St. Kitts Music Festival ends on high note

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE 13th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival ended last night (June 27) at the Warner Park stadium with performances by Hans and The Hillbillies, KC5, Shakki, Regina Belle, T-Pain and KC& The Sunshine Band.

Hans and The Hillbillies opened the show with a bang and rocked the crowd by dishing out a number of songs with much passion and energy. According to one young man, he was surprised at their performance: “I didn’t expect them to be so good, it was as if they knew they had something to prove he added.

The KC5 Band was up next and delivered a great blend and mixture of music, but the crowd got into full gear when ‘Shakal’, the lead singer of the band, performed his past hit song ‘You make me wanna sing you a love song’.

Shakki was next up to take the stage and changed the mood a bit, as she belted out a number of soca anthems in what many thought was a real sexy outfit she wore that made sure her presence was remembered.

She performed songs such as ‘Doing it Right’, ‘DJ Play’ and ‘Like a Dove’. Shakki told SKNVibes that “I just went out and did my best and it work out for me because I could tell the crowd enjoyed it”.

Award winner Regina Belle came on stage in high energy then slowed it down with songs like ‘Dis is Love’, ‘Make it Like it Was’ and her past hit, ‘A Whole new World’, which was originally sung with Peebo Bryson but was done last night with one of her backup singers.

When it was announced that T-Pain was next to perform, the crowd had grown larger and many persons drew nearer to the front. His backup dancers set things off with music by his DJ.

As T-Pain made his way on stage all one could have heard were screams and people chanting the name of the ‘Am in love with a stripper’ singer.

He belted out a number of his hit songs and delivered energy throughout his entire performance with not just his songs but also his movements on stage, as he did much more dancing than singing while his DJ played his music.

T-Pain said that of all the islands he has ever performed, St. Kitts is without a doubt the liveliest.

Some of the songs he sang included ‘Chopped and Skrewed’, ‘Can’t Believe it’ and ‘Low’.  At the end of his performance many people called for an encore but the singer had to leave. Despite that, many persons said they definitely enjoyed him and some lucky person took his shirt home after he tossed it into the crowd.

Before he left the stage, T-Pain told the massive crowd: “Don’t do it because it’s cool, do it because you’re cool.”

KC and The Sunshine Band brought the curtains down on the event with their funk disco music while performing some of their past hits including ‘Get down Tonight’, ‘I’m Your Boogie Man’ and ‘Shake Shake Shake’.

Although some people left during their performance, the band and the dancers still managed to keep those who remained on their dancing feet.

The St. Kitts Music Festival started on Thursday (June 25) with Lightz Out Band, Grand Masters Band, King Konris, Lord Nelson, Lejah Band with Blade and Byke, Biggie Irie, Edwin Yearwood, Iwer George and Mavado, while the Friday night’s show saw Odisi Band, Dagah, Ziggy Rankin, Burning Spear, Stephen Marley and Beres Hammond.

According to Faron Lawrence, Chairman of the Festival, he was real happy with the turnout and the performances of the artistes, and they would definitely be looking into making next year bigger and even better.
