GIS Press Release

Roadtown, Tortola - The Territory will celebrate its 20th Fisherman’s Day on Friday, July 3 at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island.

The event, which is hosted by the Conservation and Fisheries Department (CFD) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour will conclude the Territory’s observation of Environment Month.

Activities will take place under the theme, 360 Degrees of Fish Security in Times of Crisis. Coordinator of Fisherman’s Day activities Mr. Samuel Davies explained the importance of recognising our fisherman.

“It is very significant and important that we celebrate Fisherman’s Day as it promotes oneness between the fisherman and the society.  Fishermen need to be recognised as they harvest the sea, at times in rough waters and heavy winds, but they contribute tremendously to our country by providing an essential service,” Mr. Davies said.

The highlights of the event, which will be observed on Territory Day, a public holiday, will include the annual fishing tournaments with three categories open to competitors: trolling, reef fishing and family fishing.  Participants must register at the Conservation and Fisheries Department by Thursday, July 2 to participate in the fishing tournaments and obtain a valid fishing licence from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour to take part in the trolling and reef fishing categories.  All tournaments will take place on July 3, with the official catch weigh in scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

“Other activities for Fisherman’s Day include a prize-giving ceremony for the fishing tournaments along with various beach games such as tug-of-war, soldier crab races and domino games,” Mr. Davies added. Attendees will also be treated to live entertainment by local bands and DJ Bertram and a fashion show presented by Envy BVI.

Persons interested in learning more about Fisherman’s Day and its activities can contact the Conservation and Fisheries Department at telephone 468-3701 extension 5555 or visit the department’s website at www.bvidef.org.
