Police apologise for misinformation on firearm discovery

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SOME of the contents of an article published by this media house on Thursday (Oct. 5), headlined “Soldiers remove 40th illegal firearm off the Federation’s streets”, were incorrect and the police have apologised for the inadvertent error.

In that article, the police, in a press release, said: “A Citizen Safety Patrol by members of the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force conducted a stop and search at South East Peninsula in result they seized and illegal firearm and matching pellets

“While conducting searches on random vehicles, the patrol discovered and seized a MagTech 22 Air Rifle with a large amount of pellets. One person was taken into custody.”

However, in another press release dated Wednesday (Oct. 4), the police had corrected the error.

Instead of members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, it was a patrol conducted by members of the Tactical Services Unit who stopped, searched and discovered a MagTech .22 Air Rifle with a large amount of pellets within a vehicle in the South East Peninsula.

Additionally, the police informed that the discovery was made at about 6:50 p.m. and the person taken into custody is a resident of Ramsbury Site in Nevis.

That discovery had taken to 40 the number of illegal firearms removed from the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis for this year.

The release however did not state if the Ramsbury Site resident is still in police custody or if charges were laid against him for the illegal firearm and ammunition.
