Charles E. Mills Secondary School makes Hurricane Relief Donations to Valley Primary School

By: CEMSS, Press Release

October 9th, 2017 -- This past weekend, principal of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School, Mr. Boris Connor and Senior Management Member, Mrs. Garcia Richardson-Matthew, made a Hurricane Relief presentation of canned goods, toiletries, water and a cheque to the Valley Primary School in Anguilla. The presentation was made at the Robert Llewelyn Bradshaw International Airport on Saturday 30th September, 2017 to the Deputy Principal of the Valley Primary School, Mrs. Tiffany Thomas-Francis.

Mrs. Thomas-Francis was at the time on her way to Anguilla after being delayed on her vacation in the United States due to the passage of Hurricane Irma and Maria.  She graciously received the items on behalf of the principal, staff and students of the Valley Primary School and thanked the Charles E. Mills Secondary School for its kind gesture.

Principal Connor reported that the Hurricane Relief Effort was the idea of Mrs. Richardson-Matthew, Senior Management member and he quickly threw his weight behind it to see it come to fruition.  He disclosed that he is intimately involved with the Valley Primary School as it was where he began his teaching career in 1990 and worked there as a teacher of grade six for five years.  He had visited the site of the school just two weeks before the devastating blow of Irma.  He understands that all of the building which constituted the school while he was a teacher there was severely damaged during the storm.

The principal expresses thanks and appreciation to all students, their parents and the teaching staff of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School for their donation to the Hurricane Relief Effort and make an appeal for those who have not yet contributed, to do so as the Relief Effort is continuing.  Mr. Connor also disclosed that a similar donation will be made to the Relief Effort for Dominica.  He is of the view that circumstances such as these created by natural disaster is a perfect opportunity to teach certain values to our children that they normally would not learn under normal circumstances.

Values of empathy, care and concerns for those who are hurting and developing skills of mobilization for action instead of just making conversation about events and tragedy, but rather how can I play a part in the solution and make an impact. As a result of this effort, students are currently working on ideas of how they can raise funds at a student body level to contribute to the Relief Effort.
