BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE driver of motor jeep P5904, which was involved in the triple-vehicle accident on Sunday night (Oct. 1) that resulted in the death of Seccada Garroden, was arrested and charged with causing fatal accident by dangerous driving.

Charged for the offence is Sheldon Burnham of Verchild’s Village.

He is currently on $20,000 bail and was ordered to surrender his travel documents as well as to appear at the District ‘B’ Magistrate’s Court in Dieppe Bay on Monday, January 8, 2018.

According to a police communiqué, the accident occurred at around 10:26 p.m. on the island’s main road in West Farm and had involved passenger bus HA413, motorcar P4795 and motor jeep P5904.

It stated that initial investigations revealed that HA413 - in which Garroden was a passenger - and PA4795 were travelling from Basseterre while the motor jeep was travelling in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

Garroden had sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the District Medical Officer.

He was at the time returning home after competing in a basketball match.

Two others in the passenger bus had sustained injuries and were taken to the JNF General Hospital for treatment, while the police had taken Burnham into custody.

According to the Police Traffic Department, that traffic accident had taken to six the number of road fatalities recorded in the twin-island Federation for the year.

A candlelight vigil, organised by the Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvement Throughout (SPIRIT), was held on Sunday evening (Oct. 8) at the Sandy Point Hard Court, where a very large number of family members, friends and sympathizers paid tribute to the fallen 19-year-old basketball player and all-round athlete.

He will be laid to rest following a Homegoing Service at the Sandy Point Playfield on Thursday (Oct. 12).
