CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A 24-year-old man was shot by a police officer and his three teenage accomplices are in custody after they had intruded a house in Fig Tree, Nevis on Monday (Oct. 9).

According to a police press release, Sheldon Hawker of Burden Pasture, Nevis was shot by the police and transported to the Alexandra Hospital where he is warded in stable condition.

The release stated that at about 1:50 p.m. on the day in question, “police responded to a report that intruders were in a house at Fig Tree, Nevis and found the intruders in the house”.

This publication understands that Hawker was shot by an officer after he attempted to flee the scene.

The release also stated that two teenage males – one 19 and the other 18 – and a 14-year-old female were found in the house with Hawker and they were taken into custody.

Also found in the house were a large quantity of marijuana and other items of evidential value.

The scene was processed by Crime Scene Technicians and investigation into this matter is ongoing.

Commenting on the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police Hilroy Brandy said: “Parents need to encourage their children to avoid being involved in crime and associating with criminals. These behaviours will only lead to the deterioration of the normal state of society.”
