    Drilling equipment to arrive shortly

CHARLESTOWN, St. Kitts – THE Nevis Island Administration (NIA) has found a new investor for its Geothermal Project and drilling equipment is scheduled to arrive on the island this week.

That announcement was made by Sales and Marketing Director at the Nevis Tourism Authority, Devon Liburd, who is currently attending the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s State of the Industry Conference in Grenada.

Addressing reporters Monday (Oct. 9) at a press conference, the Director explained that there has not been much said about the project in recent time, which was largely due to the fact that the government was “sourcing funding” to finance the project in order to ensure it moves forward.

According to Liburd, the NIA issued a statement last month informing that the project is expected to resume.

He disclosed that the expected equipment would assist with the new test wells which would be dug to ensure stability.

“This is because this part of the project would be completed before, but there is a new potential investor who would be coming in with about six to eight million dollars worth of investment. And before they can do so, they need to do their own testing.

“So that project is back on track. Equipment would arrive in Nevis during the course of the week, and over the next 45 days the test wells will be dug and, from thereon, we’ll know then.”

Speaking about tourism, the Director pointed out that currently there are no inbound flights to St. Maarten or any flight to Nevis from WinAir.

The load factor from Seaborne, he said, has been affected because there are not many persons flying out of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is one of several islands in the region that were devastated by the passage of the two-powerful Category 5 hurricanes last month.

Citizens and residents are currently picking up the pieces with the assistance of the United States Government.

Liburd revealed that Seaborne would have flown throughout, including August.

He however told reporters that during the off season, flights were not as per normal, but currently they are slowly picking up their schedule to four times per week.

In recent times, Nevis has been struggling to have numerous regional flights landing at its airport.
