Rotaract District Representative to work with Federation’s youth

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ROTARACT District Representative Kezra Lashley of Trinidad and Tobago is currently visiting the Federation to promote his non-governmental organization’s mission.

The NGO is geared to facilitate young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to promote community service, professional development, networking and fellowship.

During his stay in the Federation, Lashley will be meeting with the Rotaract Clubs of St. Kitts and Nevis to participate in a number of activities on both islands.

Providing an insight into youths being receptive to the programme, Lashley said that in the district they have seen some changes in new Rotaractors entering the programme.

“It is a great opportunity to engage the young people of the region. This is our world and we need to take care of them. So, it is a great opportunity to influence and engage them to interpret these different Caribbean islands from our district, which spans from St. Kitts and Nevis to French Guiana,” Lashley said.

He stated that the programme is aimed at providing mentors/leaders the opportunity to meet with the youths and encourage them to be “positive world changers”.

With youths in the region being described as troubled, Rotaract has been employing a number of strategies to assist them.

“There are two ways that Rotaract can assist what we considered trouble youths in our region. One is by first engaging the youths as Rotaractors and getting them involved by becoming Rotaract members. As I said before, Rotaract is about promoting service, professional development and networking, so it is a great opportunity for the Rotaractors to meet…”

Speaking to the issue of the Federation’s youth being involved in crime and violence, the District Representative said that this year’s theme is: “Make a difference, leave you mark”, which he noted is calling on everyone to understand that they have a specific purpose in the world.

Against that backdrop, he stated that they would encourage each Rotaractor to have a purpose and to “engage that purpose of making a difference even in their world”.

“So, even in St. Kitts here we are encouraging Rotaractors in St. Kitts and Nevis to make that positive difference,” he added.

The Trinidadian disclosed that he had joined the organisation in 2007 when he was a sixth form secondary school student.

It was out of a need for something to do that gave birth to the idea of becoming a Rotaractor, he said.

“It was out of that opportunity to see how we as young people can make a difference. We started with a project that impacted an orphanage and we just went and read to these children to see how they responded. And how they looked forward to seeing us opened up my eyes to the difference that young people can make,” he explained.

Lashley is scheduled to depart the Federation on Sunday (Oct. 15).
