SKN not ranked in latest FIBA Ratings

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has released its latest world rankings, but St. Kitts and Nevis is not on the list which includes 15 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) nations.

In the latest world rankings released on Wednesday (Oct. 11), only 15 Caribbean  Basketball  Confederation nations were rated on the list with Puerto Rico taking the position.

Puerto Rico is ranked 15th, Dominican Republic 17th, US Virgin Islands 51st, Bahamas 59th, Cuba 60th, Jamaica 68th, Antigua 76th, British Virgin Islands 92nd, Barbados 97th, St. Vincent and the Grenadines 100th,  Bermuda 109th, Guyana 110th, Suriname 118th, Cayman Islands 121st and Trinidad and Tobago 143rd.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Federation indicated that it had launched its “new FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by Nike”.

The world governing body for the sport stated that the new innovative game-based ranking, factors in results from official games played by 149 national teams and would be updated after every window of qualifiers and following the conclusion of top official FIBA competitions.

This new system could see the Federation continuing to be off the list, as SKNVibes understands that there are in-house fighting between executive members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Basketball Association.

Sources told SKNVibes that two of the body’s top brass are at loggerhead over several recent tournaments and coaching selection.

Additionally, the Federation’s senior men’s team has not been active for a number of years at the CBC regional tournaments, which is a qualifier for the World Cup and Olympic Games, as was reported by this media house.

They have however competed at the sub-regional and was victorious in 2016.

According to FIBA, the new ranking “is based on results of games ranging from regional pre-qualifiers all the way to the FIBA Basketball World Cup Final, and includes the Olympic Basketball Tournament as well as the Continental Cups. The previous ranking was purely competition-based and only took into account the final standings of tournaments”.

“The basic principle is simple: 1,000 basis points are awarded in each game, with the two teams earning a share of these according to the margin of victory or defeat. Weightings are added on a round basis, meaning that when a team progresses through a top official FIBA competition, its wins are worth more with every round it plays,” FIBA added.

The new system has revised weightings of the competitions, and for the first time there is the implementation of a time decay rewarding teams for their most recent performances.

This has replaced the system that was in place under the previous ranking, where it is said that all games over an eight-year period received the same value.

“…the new ranking also recognizes the value of away wins and rewards facing and beating opponents that are higher in the ranking,” FIBA said.

Commenting on the changes, FIBA Secretary General Member Patrick Baumann disclosed that the new ranking was devised with their new calendar clearly in mind.

“We are pleased to offer more teams - 149 of them, compared to 91 previously - a ranking that can be updated after every window of the qualifiers so that national teams, fans and their national federations can follow their progress on a more regular basis. Prior to the change, the rankings already proved to be among the most popular pages on FIBA basketball and we expect there will be even more debating and conversations taking place following the implementation of this new one."

The new rankings will only apply to men, as plans are afoot to introduce similar system for women and youth teams.
