Police and Fire Service investigating Lemongrass/Ashbury’s fire

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THOUGH early indications pointed to an electrical nature being the cause for the  early morning fire at the building that houses the Lemongrass Restaurant and Ashbury’s Duty Free Store on Liverpool Row, the Police Force has indicated that its officers and members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services are investigating the incident.

In a statement issued yesterday (Oct. 18), the Police Force pointed out that following preliminary investigations, “it is suspected that the cause of an early morning fire on October 17 was electrical in nature”.

Following the Tuesday morning (Oct. 17) incident, Fire Chief Everette O’Garro was quoted by WINN FM as saying that the fire was electrical in origin.

The police communiqué indicated that on Tuesday at around 5:45 a.m. the SKNFRS responded to a report of a fire at the Lemon Grass Restaurant.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews observed fire coming from the upper section of the building that houses the Lemon Grass Restaurant and Ashbury's.

The statement noted that the firemen quickly went into action to extinguish the flames at which point they were able to contain the fire to that area.

After it was extinguished, officers later observed that the fire was not at the Lemon Grass Restaurant, but at an office also located on the upper level which was occupied by Ashbury's.

“All the contents of that office were destroyed and the ceiling received considerable damage,” the statement said.

According to the police, the northern side of the affected area houses an office of the Reliance Agency and a photo studio is on the southern side.

Reportedly, there was minor damage to the two areas as a result of smoke as well as water during the process of extinguishing the fire.

Additionally, the lower flat of the building that houses Ashbury's Duty Free Store also suffered water damage.
