Firefighters commended for quick response

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services are being commended their quick response to emergencies; this time to a fire on Port Zante.

Around 7:45 p.m. yesterday (Oct. 19), firefighters at the Basseterre Fire Department responded to a call about a fire at one of the stores on Port Zante.

On arrival, they quickly jump into action as they saw a blaze at the Indigo Store, according to Fire Chief Everett O’Garro.

O’Garro told SKNVibes that the store, which sells clothing and jewellery, is owned by Indian nationals.

He disclosed that when the firefighters got inside the establishment, they noticed that the fire had spread from the base of the building into the ceiling.

“However, a number of items like clothing, souvenir items that those stores would have, were damaged in the fire,” O’Garro said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, however, it is believed that with yesterday being recognized as the Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali, the owners might have left some of their lit diyas.

SKNVibes understands that a number of Indian business owners had lit diyas at their premises last evening.

“We understand that October 19 is when Indians celebrate something called Diwali, where they light a lot of candles and were probably using fire crackers. And we believe and not confirming...we are still inquiring into the matter,” O'Garro said.

This is the second such incident in recent days where a fire would have taken place at a business establishment.

On Tuesday (Oct. 17), members of the Basseterre Fire Department had also extinguished a fire within the building that houses Lemon Grass Restaurant and Ashbury’s Duty Free Store as well as the Reliance Agency and a photo studio on Liverpool Row..

However, the firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, thus preventing it from spreading to the neighbouring buildings.

Though early indications pointed to an electrical nature being the cause, the Police Force has indicated that its officers and members of the Fire and Rescue Services are investigating the incident.
