GIS, 23 October 2017 - Domestic Violence Awareness Day will be celebrated on October 27 as efforts continue to reduce the occurrence of domestic violence locally.

Gender Affairs Coordinator, Ms. Tara-Sue Morgan said the observance of Domestic Violence Awareness is very important because it is an opportunity to educate and share knowledge that could potentially save lives. This is a period in which we recognize the existence of domestic violence and honour those who have been affected by violence with varying awareness raising activities.”

According to Ms. Morgan her office is not in a position to execute a full-fledged campaign but she would like the community to join in observing the day on October 27 by wearing purple and by shedding light on domestic violence and what can be done to help victims.

This year’s theme is “Domestic Violence is a cost we cannot afford; let’s talk about it”. This cost according to the Coordinator is a cost to the victim, the cost for medical and mental health, lost of productivity and a cost to the fabric of the society.

“We want to reflect on the highest cost to the Territory from domestic violence, not just financially but psychologically. Even one case is too much,” Ms. Morgan stated.

Violence, according to Ms. Morgan, only thrives when we are silent and blind to the signs. “We need to take a stand and work together to eradicate domestic violence throughout the BVI”, she said.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is celebrated annually in the month of October since its inception in 2007.
