BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN keeping with its promise to assist the islands ravaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the Federal Government has so far registered 72 foreign students at the pre-school, primary and secondary schools level in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Speaking at his monthly press conference on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris explained that they are committed as part of the excellent support “to our neighbours to accommodate students disrupted as a consequence of the ravages by the two hurricanes”.

As earlier reported by SKNVibes, the students came from  Anguilla, BVI, Dominica, Florida, St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Dr. Harris revealed that of the 72 registered students, 15 are from Anguilla, 24 from the British Virgin Islands, 15 from the Commonwealth of Dominica, six from the States of Florida, three from St. Thomas and nine from St. Maarten.

It is said that 35 of them were registered at the secondary level, 34 at primary schools and three at pre-schools.

A further breakdown shows that at the pre-school level, one is registered at Saddlers Nursery and two at Victoria Road.

At the primary level, two students are registered at the Sandy Point institution, two at Cayon, one at Bronte Welch, 12 at Dr. William Connor, five at Dean Glasford, six at Beach Allen, one at Dieppe Bay, two at Irishtown, two at Estridge and one at Saddlers.

At the secondary school level, 21 are registered at Basseterre High, six at Charles E. Mills Secondary, one at Verchild’s High, four at Saddler’s Secondary and three at Cayon High.

Dr. Harris revealed that 52 of the 72 students had applied for and received assistance from the Social Services Department.

SKNVibes sought to get updated information from the Ministry of Education, but up to press that proved futile.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister reported that the Public Works Department had repaired damage to the roof of the Washington Archibald High School which was caused by the hurricanes.

“I am pleased to report that repairs have been completed on two of four blocks.  Work is ongoing primarily on the weekend to complete the remaining two,” he said.
