Fake kidnapped Trinidadian remanded to prison in Guyana

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A national of Trinidad and Tobago, who allegedly faked his own kidnapping in Guyana, was today slapped with two charges and remanded to prison in the South American country.

Sawak Maraj of Lot 131 Sandyways Fairway Marval, Trinidad, appeared this morning in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennon on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony under the Kidnapping Act and giving false information to the police, which allegedly occurred on Friday, October 27, 2017.

According to information reaching this publication, the 33-year-old was employed as a Chemical Engineer in his homeland and had allegedly travelled to Guyana to attend a job interviewed with Exxon Mobile.

Additional information received stated that a room was booked for him at the Ramada Princess Hotel on the day before his arrival in Guyana, but he never showed up there.

This media house understands that instead of the Ramada Princess Hotel, Sawak had checked in for a room at the Madawini Resort on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, where it is alleged that he conspired with two other male Trinidadians to obtain a large sum of cash from his parents in Trinidad.

It was claimed that while in the room with the two men, a photograph was taken of him with a cutlass to his neck and sent to his parents, claiming that he was kidnapped and would be killed if they did not pay a ransom of US$700,000.

The parents had contacted the Guyana Police Force and, according to Nightly News, some six hours later the case was blown open after sleuths from the Major Crimes Unit reviewed CCTV footage from the airport, which revealed that the alleged victim had willingly boarded a taxi, of which the police spoke to the driver.

The sleuths reportedly found him alone in a room at the Madewini Resort dressed only in a pair of boxer shorts and was drinking fruit juice.

He was subsequently arrested and charged.
