CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Nevis Island Administration is rapidly progressing with their forward thrust in the enhancement of sports facilities on the island, as they seek to keep youths from being involved in criminal activities.

Speaking with SKNVibes News today (Nov. 1), Minister with Responsibility for Sports in the NIA, Hazel Brandy-Williams explained that they have recently upgraded several facilities and are in the process of completing phase one of the Mondo Track and carrying out works on others on the island.

She explained that the NIA budgeted a substantial amount of money towards upgrading sport facilities on Nevis, noting that over the last two years they have had some amount of work done on playfields.

The Minister pointed to extensive works being done on playfields in Brownhill, Zion and Vojn.

“It is all about sports, it’s all about youth development; the thrust is to have young people engage in and do have them diverted from deviant behaviours,” she said.

Currently, they are working to complete the Mondo Track, which would be that island’s first rubberized athletics facility.

“Phase one is completed and we are embarking on phase two in the not too distant future.”

With regards to the Elquemedo T. Willet Park in Charlestown, the Minister explained that it was on the table that extensive work would have been carried out at that facility.

She intimated that it is for that reason they are seeking to upgrade other sport facilities around the island, so when work commences at that location there would not be a pause on games being played.

“So we have indeed a special programme in terms of the upkeep and upgrade of sporting facilities on the island of Nevis going on right now,” she noted.

Meanwhile, the Mondo Track is being seen as the driver behind the island attracting more competition to the island.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Sports in the NIA and Deputy Premier, Hon. Mark Brantley told the Nevis Department of Information that they are hopeful of attracting more teams to train on the island.

"We hope to attract competitions and I want the public to be assured that what you are seeing here is going to be, at the end of the day, an International Association of Athletics Federation-certified service. That means that we will be able to stage international meets," Brantley said.
