NHC refurbishes home of St. Peter’s resident

After refurbishment

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER living in a dilapidated house for a number of years, the National Housing Corporation stepped in with over $50,000 to have it renovated and no one could have been happier than the owner, Pamella Cornelius.

At a simple key-handing over ceremony yesterday (Nov. 1), General Manager Elreter Simpson-Browne explained that the event was one in a number that they are undertaking throughout the island.

She disclosed that they started the renovation process in Stone Forth before moving to Cayon, and that the next stop would be in Tabernacle Village.

It was noted that when Cornelius’ matter came to the NHC via Minister Eugene Hamilton, they were told that they should repair the roof, but after a thorough assessment by the company’s technical team, it was discovered that the premises needed more than minor upgrades.

Simpson-Browne pointed out that after personally visiting the site, she saw the house in a “deplorable” state and “could not believe that the house was occupied”.

“Permission was then sought from our Board of Directors and the scope of works to deem this house habitable, including wall structure; the installation of the ring beam to accommodate the roof; replacement of windows and doors; complete electrical work with wiring and transformer and fixtures and fittings; complete plumbing and toilet fixtures, face basin, kitchen sink and draining pipes; paint finish; tile finish; and joinery.”

Junior Minister in the Nevis Island Administration, Hazel Brandy-Williams, who was present at the ceremony, intimated that the project has finally come to fruition.

Expressing her elation, Brandy-Williams reminded that it was at a 2014 political rally some distance from Cornelius’ renovated home that she made mention of the structure.

She stated that it was through visiting a family in the area that she saw and was appalled by the condition of the place.

“And when I enquired about the residents of the house, I was told a lady lives there. I couldn’t believe. I made it my business to mention it at that political rally in 2014.”

Federal Minister of Housing and Human Settlement, Hon. Eugene Hamilton confirmed that Brandy-Williams indeed went on the platform and gave the then Unity construct’s commitment to refurbish the home.

According to Hamilton, Cornelius has been in need since 1995, pointing out that there was a hurricane in the 90s that damaged the property.

“So, for 20 years she has been in this position and no one lifted a finger. And I therefore want to thank Minister Brandy for emphasizing the point publicly on the platform here in New Road and make us commit ourselves to ensuring that this property is finished.”

Work on the two-bedroom house started in April and was completed approximately two months thereafter.
