BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has come in for high praise as joint  operations over a nine-hour period by members of the Special Services Unit, Drug Squad, K-9 Unit and the Anti-Gang Unit, led by Superintendent Adolph Adams, have resulted in the find of two illegal firearms and 207 rounds of ammunition, among other illegal items.

According to a police communiqué, the operations, which were launched some time after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 2) and concluded about 5:00 a.m. on the following day, were conducted within various areas in Basseterre.

    The officers had unearthed one AK 47 Assault Rifle, one semi-automatic 9mm Pistol, three bulletproof vests and 207 rounds of ammunition – 70 X.22, 57 X 7.62, 50 X 5.56, 21 X 9mm and nine X .38.

This find has taken to 42 the number of illegal firearms removed from the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis for the year.

The police have reported that one person was taken into custody in relation to some of items found, while another was also in custody for possession of illegal substance found during the operations.

The communiqué stated that such operations are among several measures taken by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force in an effort to reduce crime and violence in the twin-island Federation.

According to the Force’s Tactical Commander, Superintendent Adams, though their tasks and duties are classified as dangerous, he wants to assure the nation that his unit is committed to the fight against criminal activities in the Federation.

“Our constant efforts to keep gang violence in check and our targeted intelligence operations are reaping benefits as we see a decrease in a number of crimes, mainly violent crimes,” Adams said.

The communiqué also stated that as the tourism season has already begun and the festive season is approaching, an increase in the number of events, visitor arrivals and returning nationals will demand an increased presence of security agencies, especially the police.

Superintendent Adams is however assuring that the RSCNPF is determined to sustain its efforts throughout the season in order to “continue the downward trend in crime”.

“With the public’s help, the Tactical Unit will, no doubt, continue its role in making the Federation a safe place,” he added.
