BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LEADER of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has signalled that he would not be present at today’s (Nov. 14) sitting of the National Assembly.

According to an Erasmus Williams’ release, which contained a statement from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Douglas’ absence from the sitting of the lawmaking body “is due to pre-existing travel arrangements”.

“The travel arrangements were made well in advance of this parliamentary sitting being scheduled.”

It noted that the Labour Party views today’s sitting as being under the guise to confirm rumours that the party’s leader is no longer a member of the Honourable House.

“The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) and the Parliamentary Opposition are firmly of the view that this particular parliamentary sitting was hurriedly scheduled in an effort to make the rumour about Dr. Douglas being disqualified as a Member of Parliament, appear factual.

“It is an egregious lie born of Dr. Harris’ ever-growing fear of the Labour Party’s and Dr. Douglas’ increasing popularity throughout the country after nearly three years of Team Unity’s disastrous governance.”

The release however stated that Dr. Douglas has given the nation the assurance that he would be present for the Special Session of the National Assembly to honour the Federation’s 25 Most Remarkable Teens for 2017 on Thursday (Nov. 16) and also for the 2018 Budget Debate in December.

The release also said: “The First Special Setting of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens was inaugurated in 2011 during the third-term Denzil Douglas-led St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration with Hon. Curtis Martin as Speaker, Hon. Glenn Phillip as Minister of Youth Empowerment and Mr. Geoffrey Hanley as Director of Youth.”

According to a SKNIS release, several Bills would go before the House today, one for its first reading and two for their second reading.

“The Honourable Attorney General and Minister responsible for Justice and Legal Affairs, the Honourable Vincent Byron, will seek leave to introduce and have read a first time Magistrate’s Code of Procedure (Amendment) Bill and also will seek leave to introduce and have read a second time Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill 2017, which had its first reading on July 11th, 2017,” the release read.

Additionally, the Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Finance et al. would seek leave to “introduce and have read a second time, Saint Christopher and Nevis Citizenship (CBI Escrow Accounts) Bill 2017, which had its first reading on June 13th, 2017”.

The National Assembly will be carried live on ZIZ Radio (96.1 FM) and participating radio stations. It can also be viewed live on TV Channel 5 in St. Kitts and Channel 98 in Nevis. It will also be streamed live at https://zizonline.com/tv/channel-5/
