    Police release names of dead

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS citizens and residents of the Commonwealth of Dominica are slowly recovering from the devastation left by Hurricane Maria, that island’s police force has begun to release the names of those who died during the Category 5 storm.

Though SKNVibes is not in possession of the list, one of its colleagues on the island had confirmed that the names of 26 of the 31 people who reportedly died during the passage of the hurricane were released, but the others remain unidentified.

However, according to WIC News,34 people are reportedly missing.

The online media house stated that the list shows Loubiere and Pointe Michel were the hardest hit in terms of casualties.

Four were confirmed dead in Pointe Michel and their names were given as Royston Toussaint, Murray Delmore, Veronica Peltier and Glen Alexander.

Those who were reportedly missing in Pointe Michel are Randolph Randy Charles, Philipson Renault, Ann Lanquedoc, Morian Lanquedoc, Nadora Williams, Garvin Francis, Jerome Daniel, Jayalia Lawrence, Gertain Daniel, Edith Fontaine, Nashon Attidore, Darry Grove of Vielle case and Joanne Francis.

Four were confirmed dead from the community of Grand Bay. They are Evette Leatham, Okan Letang and Jennifer Bonny, while  Alpheus Maxim is reportedly missing.

The media outlet also reported that those confirmed dead from the community of Dos Dane are Alfred Magloire, Jennifer Moulon and Anthony ‘Rasta’ Bannis, while Rita Magloire and Vitus of Paix Bouche are missing.

In Loubiere, confirmed dead is 10-year-old Yakira Joseph and missing are Destiny Joseph, Ivon Prevost, Myrtle Celaire, Clive Leblanc, Jerry Lafleur, Annie Simon and Ronnie Jolly of Petit Savanne; while Gloria Elie Prosper is confirmed dead and one-year-old Jaydon Jno Baptiste is still missing from Fond Baron.

Further, in the community of Mahaut, Alicious and Lee alias Dig are dead, while in Castle Bruce, Laronde Roberts of Mahaut and Alexis Laville of Penville have died.

Also confirmed dead are Peter Registe of Tarish Pit, Emmanuel Joseph of Fond Cole, Daminal Ishmael of Stockfarm and John Thomas as well as Ivon Jules of Morne Bruce, Irella Henry of Marigot, Janet Canoville of Belles living in Grand Fond, Theresa Frederick of Dublanc, Lucy Thomas of Scottshead and Whitfield Wallace of Woodfordhill.

Confirmed missing in Roseau are Minelle Monetto, Jeffrey Menero, Edmond Charles, Sharon Francis and Jno Lewis Fontaine, Peter Lewis in Canefield, Vanya Woodman in Bath Estates, Marcus Boyd in Castle Comfort, six-year-old Jopha Christopher in Pottersville and Christine Thomas in Savanne Paille.

WIC News also stated the police have said that they have been unable to identify the bodies of five people.

Currently, the island is said to be moving from a state of total dependency to one of recovery; in that schools are being reopened and the port has become functional, including on the weekends.

Further, water and power supplies have been restored to most communities, while commercial banks are fully operational.

“All in all, we are moving along nicely,” SKNVibes’ colleague stated.

Despite those positives, however, there are still some areas on the island where accessibility is still difficult – specifically areas that were once easy to drive through.

Though the island has returned to a significant semblance of order, there are still persons who are dependent on relief supplies, and despite the challenges in accessing some communities, those supplies are getting to them.

SKNVibes News understands that the crime problem is under control, and only recently an example was made of one man as he was sentenced to four years in jail for looting food supplies.

“Crime is extremely minimal at this time. I haven’t heard of any major criminal activity besides the looting that occurred that everyone knew about.

“To say that we have a lot of criminal activity, there is nothing really,” SKNVibes’ colleague said.

The island was left in ruins after the Category 5 storm made landfall on the island.

Trees, houses, electrical poles and power-lines were down, roofs at some locations were blown away, including that of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
