Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine’s Associate Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies Appointed as President of ACACPMT

    Dr. Arve Lee Willingham serves as the first veterinarian and first representative from an English speaking member nation to lead the organization                                                        

     

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts. – Nov.14, 2017– Dr. Arve Lee Willingham, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine’s (RUSVM) associate dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies and professor of One Health, was appointed president of the Central American and Caribbean Association for Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (ACACPMT) at the organization’s annual conference in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Dr. Willingham will serve as ACACPMT’s president from 2017 to 2019. Dr. Willingham is the first veterinarian and first representative from an English-speaking nation to lead the organization into the future.
     
    “I am honored and humbled to serve as the new president of ACACPMT, and I look forward to working toward the vision of global One Health,” Dr. Willingham said. “It is my goal that ACACPMT develops strategic interdisciplinary partnership opportunities with other regional, national, and global health organizations to address parasitic, infectious and other tropical diseases in Central America and the Caribbean.”
     
    Dr. Willingham is committed to working with ACACPMT members and engaging parasitologists, public health specialists including veterinarians, and other experts from related disciplines on ACACPMT activities that expand interdisciplinary collaborations and communications between Central American and Caribbean regions, to improve the health of people and animals. Furthermore, as the incoming president of ACACPMT, Dr. Willingham is also tasked to organize the 14th ACACPMT Congress in St Kitts in 2019. St. Kitts will be the first English Speaking country to host the congress. The last ACACPMT Congress was held at Tegucigalpa, Honduras on August, 2017.
     
    “Dr. Willingham’s wide international experience and research background, especially in resource constrained areas of the world, will lend a powerful new voice to ACACPMT,” said Dr. Jorge Alberto García Aguilar, former president of ACACPMT. “His passion and expertise within One Health will be invaluable to ACACPMT to promote collaboration and partnerships in the Caribbean region to effectively combat future challenges surrounding One Health.”
     
    Dr. Willingham brings a wealth of experience to the One Health movement. He has traveled the world for nearly three decades, dedicating his career to understanding and combating parasitic zoonotic diseases that affect livestock and people in rural areas of underdeveloped countries. His research has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship and recognition from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.
     
    Between 2010 and 2013, Dr. Willingham worked at the World Health Organization’s Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) in Geneva, Switzerland. During that time, he facilitated identification and prioritization of global research needs for parasitic and zoonotic diseases. He also assisted in initiating TDR’s new research program on environmental and climate change impacts on vector-borne diseases.
     
    Dr. Willingham is an associate dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies and professor of One Health. He earned his BSc and DVM from the University of Georgia and his PhD in Parasitology from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Denmark.
     
    The ACACPMT was founded on October 14, 1989. Although members only included countries form Central America, in 2001 the Caribbean countries were incorporated during the General Assembly celebrated in Honduras. At this time the name was changed to be the Central American and Caribbean Association of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. The mission of ACACPMT is to connect and bring together, health professionals, senior scientist and scientist in training with special interests in parasitology and tropical medicine who reside in countries throughout the Central America and Caribbean region.
