BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TOURISM Minister Hon. Lindsay Grant has informed the nation that December would be a bumper month for the St. Kitts cruise industry.

That announcement comes as officials are expecting cruise vessels to dock at Port Zante every day in December, and a record seven on the day of J’Ouvert – Boxing Day.

“And December, what a December we are having, because in December there is only one day in December that we don’t have a ship – December 17th,” Grant revealed.

He pointed out that for that month, tourism officials are expecting 115 calls, something that has never been seen before in the Federation’s history.

“One hundred and fifteen calls, bringing to our shores 174,435 passengers translating to $30,484,239 in December alone…In January 88 calls, 225,955 passengers translating to US$25,099,081.”

However, December alone is not busy, according to the Tourism Minister, for November is also expected to be as equally packed with this week seeing some 14 ships making calls to the Port.

Those ships, according to Minister Grant, would be ferrying an accumulated 35,759 passengers.

He told the National Assembly on Tuesday (Nov. 14) that the Business Research and Economic Advisers (BREA), who provide a report on the spending of every visitor in each of the 35 jurisdictions under their watch, indicated that every visitor to the island spends US $111.08.

And with the 14 ships docking and carrying 35,759 passengers this week, it translates to US $3,972,108 or approximately EC $10.7 million being pumped into the economy this week.

Further, looking at the broader November period, the Minister intimated that for the month they are expecting 76 calls with a total of 160,843 passengers gracing St. Kitts, redounding to an economic benefit of US$17,866,440.

Grant elucidated that  between November and January, St. Kitts would see $199, 555, 662 being pumped into the economy.

“That is fantastic news,” he exclaimed.

Following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, St. Kitts and Nevis has benefited as cruise ships have resorted to docking at Port Zante in the Eastern Caribbean.

Ports in Dominica, the British Virgins Islands, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands and Anguilla have all been damaged owing to the Category 5 storms.
