BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING yesterday’s (Nov. 17) shooting-death of 56-year-old Lincoln Liburd in Nevis, police on St. Kitts are investigating two other separate incidents that left one man hospitalised and another escaping unscathed.

According to a police communiqué, Darren ‘Bookie’ Caines of Rawlins Ground, St. Paul’s Village was shot multiple times at about 3:25 this morning in Saddlers Village.

The communiqué stated that Caines and his younger brother were travelling in a car when it got a flat tyre in Saddlers Village and they stopped to fix it.

However, upon completion, an unknown gunman shot Caines multiple times and he and his brother proceeded to the Dieppe Bay Police Station and reported the incident.

He was bleeding profusely and they then proceeded to the Pogson Medical Center in Sandy Point, where he received initial treatment and later transported to the JNF Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is currently warded.

This publication understands that he was struck in the shoulder and neck. However, the bullet that entered his neck reportedly exited through his face, while the brother was unscathed.

The 25-year-old Caines is a former Customs Officer currently on bail.

He was among four men taken into police custody on Saturday, August 19, 2017 and was charged with possession of one Glock 23 Pistol, possession of 31 rounds of ammunition, one Ruger SR 40 Pistol, possession of one Ruger SR 40 Pistol with intent by means to endanger life.

The other incident under investigation occurred yesterday in Dieppe Bay.

Police reported that at about 8:30 a.m. preliminary investigations revealed Kassim Buchanan of Farm Site, Sandy Point was walking on the road towards the Dieppe Bay Police Station when an assailant, dressed in dark clothing, came from an abandoned house on Main Street, Dieppe Bay and ran after him, firing several shots.

He did not sustain any injury and officers from the Dieppe Bay Police Station and the Crime Scene Unit had responded, canvassed the scene and collected a number of items of evidential value.

One suspect is in custody assisting the police with their investigation.

This is not the first time that Buchanan came under gunfire and escaped unharmed.

Early in the morning of Wednesday, March 1, 2017, Buchannan also escaped being injured when an unknown assailant had fired a number of shot at a vehicle in which he and several members of his family were travelling.

His mother was shot in her upper arm, like him, his brother and young niece were unscathed.

Police are also seeking the public’s assistance in bringing the perpetrators of these two incidents to justice.
