TDC engages farmers and students on organic farming

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POPULAR local Group of Companies, TDC held a seminar yesterday (Nov. 21) to enlighten farmers and others involved in agriculture about the benefits that could be gleaned from organic farming.

The seminar, which was held at the company’s Fort Street-based conference room, was conducted by regional expert Barry Aziz, whose experience in Agriculture Science spans more than 25 years.

During the one-day event, participants were taught organics in general, its impact on the environment as well as on human and animal life.

The role of organics with regards to food safety and security – including the use of pesticides and other chemicals - was also imparted to the participants.

Aziz used the occasion to feature an organic line of products from his US-based company – Excel Ag.

TDC Executive Director Glenville Jeffers explained that the purpose of the event was to promote healthy living and increase an awareness of organic agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis, while demonstrating how the average person could produce and prepare healthy foods.

“Additionally, it would be a proper guide for the use of insecticides, pesticides and herbicides for users, as we move away from our dependence on harmful chemicals to sustain us,” Jeffers said.

Against that backdrop, he noted that the event was not geared for persons who just wanted to produce crops organically, but rather for people who are interested in the green revolution.

“This means that we must continue to work with our partners in business to play our part in educating our customers and non-customers, students, as it relates to the quantity and quality of food consumed and the exposure to certain chemicals within our environment.”

According to TDC Marketing Assistant, Dominic Mathew, the company views it an honour to have the expert engaging famers and hosting similar exercises where they continue to reach out to their partners in service.

Mathew urged the participants to ensure that the information garnered from the workshop is taken and implemented in the different agriculture environments.
