(EMU) – St. Kitts, November, 20, 2017: Reformation of the Education Sector jumps into action with the launch of the Education Sector Plan.

On the grounds of the Ocean Terrace Inn on Friday, 17th November, the Ministry revealed the plan to all stakeholders within the educational realm in the Federation. The Ministry has been working to develop this plan to guide policy action over the next five years and to align its policies with initiatives such as the OECS Education Sector Strategy.

The Ministry of Education is implementing the 2017–2021 Education Sector Plan under the theme: Education for All: Embracing Change, Securing the Future. The plan builds on its predecessor, the White Paper on Education Development and Policy 2009–2019, and provides a strategic road-map for the Ministry to follow to improve the provision and administration of education over the medium-term plan period.

“Education is dynamic and we have to keep abreast of the new changes. The Ministry of Education accepts this notion and therefore carefully developed a policy document with the three major policy goals,” announced Hon. Shawn Richards, Minister of Education et al as he addressed the audience. He continued, “These goals adopted new ideologies to educate all learners and is intended to ultimately secure a future of highly educated citizens who would contribute to sustainable development, build civic responsibility, and succeed locally and globally.”

The Education Sector Plan responds to many developmental priorities formulated at national, regional, and global levels.

The three main goals of the plan are: i) Improving equitable access and participation in education at all levels; ii) strengthening the quality and relevance of education at all levels to improve learning outcomes, by revising national curriculum; iii) enhancing governance planning and management with the aim to improve efficiency and effectiveness throughout the sector.

These goals, once implemented will asset in developing leadership capabilities, assessing and revising the national curriculum and professionalizing the teaching profession are amongst some of the major advances.

Guided by the vision of providing holistic lifelong education for all, the Education Sector Plan responds to the developmental priorities outlined in a number of national policy and strategy documents, and demonstrates the Federation’s commitment to regional and global education.

Gratitude was extended for the external assessment of the education policy context that has informed this plan, to the UNESCO Division for Policies for Lifelong Learning Systems, specifically the Policy Review Team.
