November 29th, 2017 -- St. Kitts and Nevis improved sharply from their opening match in the CONCACAF Caribbean U-20 Women’s tournament on Friday night in their second encounter against the Dominican Republic. Despite the improved play however, they lost 4-0 but were given a standing ovation from fans as they left the field at the Warner Park.
Coming off a humiliating defeat to Haiti on Wednesday night, the home girls were more on the attacking front in this match but went down early in the 10th minute with a goal from Lisa Sanchez from a corner kick in close proximity. Going down just 1-0 at the half, meant the home side could make an effort to get something from the game and started off the second half in that fashion.
Link up plays from Carley Uddenberg and Cloey Uddenberg created a breakaway chance for St. Kitts midway in the second half only for a Dom Rep defender to clear the ball from danger with a last minute sliding tackle, the best chance all game for St. Kitts and Nevis. The home side lived to rue that miss as Alyssa Jasmine doubled the lead for the visitors.
Andra Rivas then sealed the win for the Dominican Republic with two more goals, the latter coming in stoppage time. The loss means St. Kitts and Nevis are virtually out of the competition and cannot progress to the next round and only be played for pride against Jamaica on Sunday.
St. Kitts and Nevis Coach Shandor Wilkinson, despite being sad at the loss, said the effort of her girls Friday night, was commendable.
Jamaica booked their ticket to the next round of the competition with a 1-0 win over Haiti in the first of Friday’s double header. Nevillegail Able of Jamaica scored the goal in the first half, but Haiti would be hitting themselves for not winning this match. The second half was all Haiti, as two of their shots hit the cross bar. But it was Jamaica’s goalkeeper Sydney Schneider that was the star of the match as her goal keeping efforts kept Jamaica in the game.
Despite Haiti’s best efforts, they just could not get the ball pass her, and when they did, the crossbar was in the way. Jamaica’s coach Lorne Donaldson admitted that his strategy was to soak up the pressure in the second half, primarily because he knew the Haitian players were very fit. Charles Fiorda of Haiti was obviously disappointed to not get the win, considering their performance.
