BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A recent initiative of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) will see teams from its 41 member associations engaged in a unified year-round competition platform.

This initiative, however, which would certainly find favour with many football nations in the Caribbean region that are starved of much competition, will not come on stream until 2019.

A CONCACAF release stated that the format of the new initiative provides for a more quality, meaningful competition, and that the schedule and structure would be unveiled by early 2018.

“The CONCACAF League of Nations will be based on a league structure in which the national teams of the Confederation’s 41 Member Associations will be included. They will be divided into three different leagues -- based on their sporting level -- with a champion to be crowned at the end of each edition. To seed teams into their respective leagues, the League of Nations will begin with a preliminary series of matches played across four different dates beginning in September 2018.

“The new tournament will bring meaningful home-and-away matches featuring competition for League titles, performance prizes, and will include promotion and relegation within the system of three leagues. The Confederation’s teams will also contend -- via the League of Nations -- for the right to play in international championships such as the Gold Cup. Additionally, the League of Nations will inform a CONCACAF ranking system that will be used as the basis for future World Cup Qualifying seeding,” the release reads.

When asked by SKNVibes Sports about this new initiative, President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), Anthony Johnson thanked CONCACAF for its investment in the proposed tournament which was recently agreed upon by member countries.

Johnson stated that for a very long time one of the impediments in having more football played “is finance, and finance as it relates to travel because, unfortunately, we have to get over the waters in order to play our neighbouring islands”.

“So, I am pleased with the effort that is being made to assisting with the cost of travel for the nations cup,” he added.

General Secretary Stanley Jacobs confirmed that the League is expected to kickoff in 2019 and would be played over a four-year period.

According to CONCACAF,  the division in which each team plays would be made public in 2018.
