Seven selected for Antigua Carnival Queen Pageant

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – AS the 2009 Antigua Carnival gears up, the names of seven beauties who will be vying for the Queen of Carnival crown have been revealed.

The bevy of beauties who will be competing in the most prestigious and coveted pageant in Antigua and Barbuda are Jahmeel Jones, Janelle Alexander, Melissa Bird, Nathalia Barnes, Ryancia Henry, Sharlene Colthard and Shelana George.

They will be judged in the Talent, Evening Wear, Carnival Costume, Swimwear and the Personal Development segments.

The contestants have recently received significant support from Sobe Adrenaline Rush, a fruit-flavoured energy drink specifically geared for women, through its local distributor Island Provision Ltd.

The pageant will be held on Monday, July 27 and is one of the highlights for the “It’s Your, It’s Mine, Carnival 2009” lineup.
The Carnival officially opens with a ceremony on July 25 and will last until August 4 with the Parades of Troupes and Group Last Lap ending the festivities.

On July 26, the Children’s Carnival will be held, followed by the Queen of Carnival on July 27 and Teen Splash on July 28.
The Caribbean Melting Pot will take place on July 29 and National Panorama on July 30.

One of the prestigious pageants in the Caribbean, the Jaycees Caribbean Queen, will take place on July 31, Party Monarch on August 1, Calypso Monarch on August 2 and J’Ouvert will be held on August 3 while Last Lap will be held on August 4.

A number of pre-carnival activities are also organised to get everyone in the mood and warmed up for the annual event.

Presently, Ryancia Henry leads in a poll conducted by the Antigua Carnival site where people can vote for the delegate who they think will win. Out of a total of 8 476 votes, Henry has acquired 3 739.
