Premier Amory announces date for Nevis Island Assembly Elections

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE ringing of the proverbial bell, which traditionally signals the date of upcoming elections in the Federation, was heard last night (Nov. 30) in Nevis and it was announced that the Nevis Island Assembly Elections would be held on Monday, December 18, 2017.

The announcement was made by former Leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) and Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Vance Amory at a public meeting in Church Ground.

According to Amory, he had written to and spoken with the Governor General, Sir Tapley Seaton, on the date for Nomination Day and also that of Election Day.

“I want to say to you very quietly that I have been to see the Governor General and I advised him. I gave him a letter, addressed very officially to him, in respect of the Nevis election and in that note and in our discussion, I advised the Governor General that he uses his good offices and his authority to prorogue/dissolve the Nevis Assembly with effect from today the 30th day of November…

“Based on that, I also said having discussed with the leader and his team that the Nomination Day would be the 11th day of December and the day to conduct the polls, Election Day, will be…the day for the election for the casting of your vote for the polls in Nevis for the Nevis Island Assembly to elect your new government, your new premier… I have advised the Governor General and he has agreed and the writ will be issued that Election Day will be the 18th of December.”

Speaking to the media this morning, Deputy Premier and recently-appointed Leader of the CCM, the Hon. Mark Brantley was asked if he was prepared for the elections.

“Very well prepared,” he exclaimed, adding, “I think that is al lot of speculation so last night the Premier put that speculation to rest, announced the date, Nomination Day December the 11th and Election Day will be December the 18th. I think that will be the day when the people of Nevis decide in a free and fair election the next government for the next five years.

He was also asked why they would hold elections in the middle of December when there are activities such as Christmas and National Carnival.

“It was a date that we saw as an appropriate date; it is not unusual. Elections are held at different points in time. We had elections in January, we had elections at different points throughout the year and we thought it was an opportune time to hold an election.

“People are in a good mood, I think in Nevis it is a good time. The island is doing well, the economy is doing well, jobs are at an all-time high, businesses are doing well, people are getting opportunities on the island [and] I think the timing is appropriate to have an election and to ask the people to renew our mandate.”

Brantley also said that the CCM is confident going into the elections and that the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) is short on ideas.

“We are very confident. I think that all of our polling suggests that we are well ahead of the opposition. They have not been able to get any traction with any of the things they are putting out there. They are very short on ideas, very big on abuse and I think our electorate has moved beyond that. We in the CCM originally campaign of hope, we campaign of ideas and we feel that that campaign is resonating for our people.”

He said his party is confident of winning four seats and efforts are being made to capture five.

“We feel very confident about four seats and we are putting a lot of pressure on that fifth seat. That fifth seat is always going to be difficult for us, because it is in a traditional stronghold for the NRP. But we think Mr. Parry, who is the representative there, has been there for 30 years, I think at his age now, at his stage now the people of St. Thomas’ are looking for something different. And so we are inviting them to come over and to join us. I think under the big blue tent we have a lot of room, and so we think St. Thomas’ will come to us this time. And we are making maximum effort to secure that seat as well.”

Going into the upcoming elections, NRP’s Robelto Hector will be contesting against CCM’s Spencer Brand for the St. Paul’s seat; former Premier Hensley Daniel will be going up against Deputy Premier and CCM’s Leader Mark Bantley for St. John’s; in St. George’s, NRP’s Corey Tyson will be contesting against CCM’s newcomer Eric Evelyn, who has replaced former Leader Vance Amory; while NRP’s Virgil Hodge will clash with CCM’s Alexis Jeffers for St. James'; and NRP’s Leader and former Premier Joseph Parry will knock heads with CCM’s Keith Scarborough for that of St. Thomas’.
