Sugar Boyz nailed Spice Boyz in International Friendly

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis National Men’s Football team warded off challenges from its Grenadian counterpart to register a 1-nil victory on Saturday evening (Dec. 2) at the Warner Park Football Stadium.

The game was the Sugar Boyz fifth Internationally Friendly for the year in which they had mixed fortunes.

When the whistle sounded off on Saturday, it was an even contest between the two units, but the Spice Boyz was playing a more attacking game.

In the early exchanges of the game, the Sugar Boyz goalkeeper was put under immense pressure but thwarted all efforts by the Grenadians.

However, a Romario Martin strike in the 60th minute was enough to separate the two teams, giving the home side victory.

In a release, head coach of the St. Kitts-Nevis Senior Men’s National Football team, Jacques Passy was quoted as saying that he was pleased with his team’s performance.

He pointed out that their game plan was perfectly executed.

“It could have been five-nil. I am extremely proud. The performance of the team was outstanding,” Passy said.

According to Passy, the team would begin its preparation for the CONCACAF’s new League of Nations which is slated to come on stream in 2019, but in 2018 teams would be engaged in a number of friendly matches.

“In September, we are going to have a very important League of Nations and we are expecting many practice sessions between now and the tournament,” Passy said.

Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson, President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), expressed his satisfaction with the national team’s performance, but he has his sight on the new year – where there would be a number of other international games.

“We are now presently exploring a number of other potential friendlies with other nations, because we believe it is important to keep playing. The League of Nations being introduced by CONCACAF next year is critical, so it is important that we are prepared to do well in that tournament.”

Johnson said at least one international friendly would be played in March 2018.
