Big names lead the pack into Calypso semi-finals

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -SOME of the Federation’s biggest names in the Calypso arena topped the list of semi-finalists, after the two-night of first round eliminations wrapped up last evening (Dec. 4) at Carnival Village.

     

    Popular entertainer Socrates is leading the pack, as he topped the list of 16 performers moving on to the semi-finals.

    The veteran gained 255 points with his ‘Count Your Blessings’ lyrics. He was followed by Rudder with 246 points, who entertained the crowd with ‘Back to School’ and King Astro in third position with 243 points singing ‘Watch Dog’.

    This year’s Calypso Competition entries touched various topics, from children’s behaviour to poverty, crime and politics.  

    Also making it through to the semi-finals are: Big Lice with his controversial ‘We Didn’t Vote for That’; Jack Spanner with ‘All Lives Matter’; Miss Independent with ‘Where Is Da Leadership’; Murray with ‘Family’; Daddy Nature with Sweetness, Neatness, Sweetness; Zarkie with ‘I want To See How It Feel’; and Hollywood with ‘My Best Guest’.

    The other semi-finalist are Charris D, Lady Diva, King Ayatollah, Singing Jackie and Lard Kut.

    Performers were judged under three criteria - Lyrics 40 points, Music 30 and performance 30 points.

    The semi-finalists will be competing on December 17, from which the top eight contestants will progress to the finals to battle against reigning King, Craig.
