BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HE did it before and he has done it again. Skinny Fabulous, whose real name is Gamal Doyle, was once again crowned the St. Vincent Carnival Soca Monarch in the wee hours of Sunday, July 5.

During the St. Vincent Carnival celebration, the much anticipated Soca Monarch Competition was held at Victoria Park where Doyle sang ‘The beast let go’ and defeated 19 other competitors to retain his crown.

According to a release, the stage was occupied with beasts of various shapes and sizes and a few low stick men as Doyle sent the crowd into a frenzy with his energetic performance.

His biggest rival in the competition was six-time winner Delroy ‘Fireman’ Hooper, who once again had to settle for second place, with his rendition of ‘Ragz Invasion’.

In third place was Shertz ‘Problem Child’ James, brother of Doyle, who came down from the ceiling at the beginning of his crowd-pleaser ‘Mad House’.

Montgomery ‘Demus’ Laborde rounded out the top four places with his rendition ‘Rum Junkie’ while other credible performances came from Icon, Top Notch Swift, Fire Empress, The Man Stone and DJ 20.

Despite experiencing an asthma attack after his winning performance, Doyle still managed to go on stage where he was crowned by the Minister of Culture, Rene Baptiste.

Today, revellers will take to the streets of St. Vincent for their J‘Ouvert celebration while tonight will be a street party followed by Mardi Gras tomorrow (July 7).
