Chamber: Business Owners should be Mindful During the Season

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRESIDENT of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Jose Rosa wants proprietors to be mindful of criminal activities during the Christmas season.

Rosa, during a recent SKNVibes interview, stated that during the Christmas season people and business owners need to be more aware of their surroundings because there is always the possibility of increased criminal activities.

Over the last several weeks, there have been increasing cases of robberies of small business establishments around St. Kitts.

“During the Christmas season we always have to be aware there might be an increase or a potential increase in crime.”

He stated that there was a quiet period prior to several shooting incidents but that is no time for the business community to sit and take it easy.

“We are going to continue to work with the police and the government to ensure that the enforcement that was done for the several months is going to continue. The police usually have their plan during the Carnival with additional police patrolling the country, especially in those areas that are believed to have some incidents.”

The Chamber boss noted that they are expecting that working with the police could stem the problem.

If the crime problem reaches to a point where it can affect the business community, Rosa said that “then we would send out boys (police) outside to make sure the necessary conditions would be put in place to control the problem.

Rosa called on the business sector to invest in the use of more cameras and additional security on their premises.

Further, he added that it is not only that sector who should upgrade security, but citizens should “increase the amount of expenses on security”.

Over the last several weeks, there have been a number of reported break-ins on St. Kitts.

According to media reports, a mother and her children were tied up by armed masked men with duct tape, as they proceeded to rob the home as the male resident slept.

That incident reportedly occurred yesterday (Dec. 12) in Halfway Tree.

On December 8, a hair salon on Durant Avenue was robbed and one person in the business establishment at the time sustained head injuries, while a Chinese supermarket in Sandy Point was robbed.

Prior to that a shop in St. Paul’s was also robbed by gunmen.
