MP Liburd Baffled at Former Elections Supervisors Arrest

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Dec/16/17) – OPPOSITION Member of Parliament and Lawyer, Hon. Marcella Liburd is confused over the arrest of the former Supervisor of Elections, Wingrove George.

SKNVibes News learnt late last evening that George was arrested and charged with Misconduct in Public Office,  and has since been released on bail.

After taking office in 2015, the Team Unity Government launched a two-prong investigation into alleged breaches and other misconduct at the electoral office.

The government sought to find out what forced the then Supervisor of Elections to stop the vote count on the night of the elections.

But Liburd told SKNVibes that she has not heard of anyone ever being slapped with such a charge in St. kitts and Nevis.

“I have never in my lifetime heard anyone being charged with anything to do with that. The alleged charges that I saw, spoke to the fact that he didn’t make the announcement for Constituencies Four and Eight, in a timely manner.”

The former government minister raised several questions about the charge.

“If what they are saying is true; are they saying that number four and eight should really not be in the parliament? But really, from what I say, the charges said that it is misconduct in that he did not make the announcement for Constituency four and eight in a timely manner.”

However, Liburd contends that the arrest is “strictly vindictive politics”.

“Because if that is the charge in that he did not make the announcement in timely manner…it is vindictive. That was almost three years ago.”

The media was last told by the Attorney General that the mater was in the hands of the police.
