Opposition Leader wants citizens to extend generosity outside of Christmas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LEADER of the Opposition, Dr. Denzil Douglas has called on the public to extend generosity beyond boundaries of the Christmas season.

He stated in his Christmas day address that: “It is my prayer that we will strive, not just during the Christmas Season, but each day of our lives, to live as he (Jesus Christ) lived and to love as he loved.  For it is the birth and the teachings of Christ that give meaning to Christmas.”

Like many countries around the world, St. Kitts and Nevis, today, December 25, celebrate Christmas – the birth of the savour Jesus Christ.

Against that backdrop he stated that Christmas makes us kinder, while calling on the people to find it within themselves “to extend this generosity of spirit well beyond the confines of this sacred Christmas season, so that kindness becomes a defining feature of our souls.  And when the Christ Child became a man, he impressed upon us the importance of putting to the very best use the talents with which we have been blessed”.

He stated then that “as we look to the future, commit ourselves to lives marked not only by kindness, but by discipline and courage also, so that we might lift each other up, and in so doing, lift our nation up - to heights that we have known before, and to which we and only we, working together with the help of God, will once again return it”.

The federation has over the last several years been struck by a number of homicides and other related violence, and 2017 is no different.

But the former prime minister noted that it is with humble hearts that people should thank God that they have been allowed to experience yet another Christmas together.

He explained that two thousand years after his birth, people of all races and classes, across the globe, pay homage to the Christ Child because the faith, hope, and love  he taught have transformed the hearts of man, and cleansed the human soul.

“May our faith be as clear as the star that shone over Bethlehem. May our courage be as deep as that of the Wise Men who travelled a great distance to see The Christ Child.

“May our joy be pure as that of the shepherds upon learning the glad tidings. And may God grant us all a peaceful and blessed Christmas,” Dr. Douglas added.
