Miss Independent first female Senior Calypso Monarch

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Dec. 30.17 – IT was a historic evening for the Senior Calypso, as Karisia Willett - Miss Independent – became the first female to lift the national title.

Willett (766 points) beat out some of the top senior performers in the Federation, including the likes of King Ayatolla, King Socrates and 2016 champion, King Craig.

Occupying the second spot was Big Lice with 742 points, followed by King Craig with 733 and King Ayatollah came in fourth with 730 points.

With each of the eight-finalists performing two songs, Queen Miss Independent led the pack with her ‘where is de leadership’ lyrics – a song that questioned many in society for the ills that are happening in the Federation.

Returning the second time around, the Queen sang ‘It taste de same’.

King Craig paid tribute to teenager, Leanna Napoleon, whose death rocked the Federation earlier this year with his lyrics, ‘Sleep on’. He later returned with ‘Stand up’.
    .
Big Lice entered the stage to a loud applause from the large crowd in attendance and he entertained, with his ‘Let the Calypsonian Sing’; - a piece that spoke about the screening of calypso lyrics.

He later returned to close out the show with his popular “We did not vote for that’ song, an entry that has been spinning heads in the Federation.

Meanwhile, Willett is no stranger to the winner’s circle, as in 2008 she won the Junior Calypso title.

Activities for Carnival continues this evening with the Ms. Hayne Smith pageant at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, and the Inception Fete slated for the Warner Park Football Stadium.
