GREAT BAY, St. Martin (January 3, 2018)—Language, Culture and Identity in St. Martin by Rhoda Arrindell, a leading St. Martin linguist, has won the Graphic Design USA Award according to Gordon Kay, editor of the GDUSA magazine.

Carole Maugé-Lewis designed the winning book cover for the House of Nehesi Publishers (HNP) title, said Jacqueline Sample, president of the St. Martin indie press.

In his letter to HNP in December, Kay congratulated Sample “and the House of Nehesi Publishers on the award-winning performance in our 54th Annual American Graphic Design Awards.”

Kay called the design performance by Maugé-Lewis “exceptional.” Prof. Maugé-Lewis is the Coordinator of Graphic Communication Internships at Kennesaw State University.

“From nearly 10,000 entries, a small handful of design projects — including your Language, Culture and Identity in St. Martin Book Design — were selected as winners,” said Kay.

The flagship awards program of the New York City-based Graphic Design USA magazine, “honors the power of design to shape commerce, culture and causes in all media,” said Kay.

“Ms. Maugé-Lewis and House of Nehesi Publishers are in great company” for the GDUSA Awards 2017, said the magazine editor. “Other clients whose designers or agencies were honored in this year’s competition include the likes of AT&T, American Bar Association (ABA), Citibank, Corona Beer, Domino’s Pizza, GEICO, Harvard University, Hewlett-Packard, India Ministry of Tourism, Mount Gay Rum, PepsiCo, Pfizer, National Gallery of Canada, Starbucks, Samsung, Southern Poverty Law Center, Updike Literary Prize, U.S. State Department, Walmart, and others,” said Kay.

Kay also pointed out that the “Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) has been the magazine for creative professionals since 1963.”

Sample said that, “winning the American Graphic Design Award is a surprising high point for the 35th anniversary of HNP. It’s also a unique encouragement to ‘press on’ with the rest of St. Martin and the Caribbean following the hurricanes such as Irma—which damaged House of Nehesi’s studio space, destroying documents and equipment.”

“I am very thankful to Prof. Carole Maugé-Lewis for her highly creative professionalism as a graphic designer and for her generous spirit. Many thanks to GDUSA for selecting the HNP book among its new award winners; and congratulations to Dr. Rhoda Arrindell for publishing Language, Culture and Identity in St. Martin with us,” said Sample. HNP is an NGO and not-for-profit foundation.
